Stash It's privacy policy
Stash It is a read-later app I (Mike Cann) made, with an iPhone app, a web app at stashit.mikecann.app and a Chrome extension. This page says what it keeps about you, where that goes, who can see it and how to get rid of it. The short version is it keeps the things you stash so it can show them back to you, and I don't sell any of it to anyone.
What Stash It keeps
- Your email address from Sign in with Apple or Google, and your name if they send it (Google sends your profile photo too). That's your account. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, I only ever see the relay address.
- The links you stash, with each one's title, description, picture and site icon, and a video's length. Also whether it's in your stash, archive or bin, and how far through it you've read.
- A saved copy of each article's text, or a video's transcript, so you can read it later and without signal.
- Your notes, and in the web app, your chats with the AI about an item.
- A short profile of what you're into, which the AI writes from the things you archive and your notes, as long as "Let the AI learn" is switched on. You can read it under Me in the iPhone app and change it in the web app.
- Your settings, and if you use the Chrome extension, a token that lets it stash things to your account.
The iPhone app also keeps a copy of your stash on the phone, with the saved articles and pictures, so it works without signal. It's all only used to run Stash It for you.
Where it's stored
Stash It's server, database and file storage run on Convex, and everything in the list above is kept there. The website and web app are served by Vercel, and the domain's DNS is on Cloudflare.
Other services it uses
- Apple and Google handle signing in. They tell Stash It your email address, and your name if they've got it.
- When you stash a link, Stash It's server fetches the page and pulls the article out with Readability (the same thing Firefox's reader view uses). If that doesn't work it asks Jina Reader for the page instead. The site, and sometimes Jina, see the link being fetched by Stash It's server, but not who you are.
- For YouTube videos it gets the thumbnail and the length from YouTube, and the transcript from youtubetranscript.com.
- OpenRouter runs the AI parts, with models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. It gets sent a page's text to tidy up when it came from Jina, an item and your messages when you chat about it, and what you archive (with your notes and your profile) when your profile gets updated.
- Pictures and site icons in your stash load straight from the sites they belong to, and when the reader opens the real web page it's the same as opening it in Safari. So those sites see your internet address, like any website would.
The Chrome extension
The extension only reads the address of the tab you're on when you click it, and sends that to your Stash It account. It never looks at your browsing history or your other tabs. It keeps a token in Chrome's extension storage so you stay signed in, and uninstalling the extension removes it.
Stash It's use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Who can see it
Just you. I run Stash It, so I can get at the database, but I don't go looking at what people have stashed unless you ask me to help with something, or I have to for security or because the law says so.
Ads, tracking and selling your data
There's no advertising or analytics in Stash It, and nothing that follows you around other apps or websites. I don't sell or rent your data to anyone (and never will), it never goes to data brokers, and it's never used to decide things like credit.
Deleting things
Anything you put in the bin is deleted for good after 30 days.
To delete your account, go to Me in the iPhone app and tap Delete account. That deletes your account and everything in it from Stash It's server, and you can't undo it. If you can't get into the app, email me at stashit@mikecann.app from the address you signed in with and I'll delete it for you.
Kids
Stash It isn't made for children under 13, and doesn't knowingly collect anything from them.
Changes
If this policy changes I'll update it here and change the date at the top.
